Rewarding Sustainable and Innovative Procurement – Procura+

The Procura+ Awards are a bit different from many other awards that celebrate sustainability and innovation in procurement, because they aren’t looking for new initiatives. These are about procurements that are already running, set up to achieve significant improvements in public goods, services, processes or infrastructure. They are awarded in three categories: Sustainable Procurement of the Year — recognising the outstanding environmental, social and economic impacts of the procurement; Innovation Procurement of the Year — recognising the outstanding innovation of the procurement and the public authority as a launch customer; Tender Procedure of the Year — recognising an outstanding approach to sustainable and innovation procurement.

Procura+ is a network of more than 40 European public authorities and regions that
connect, exchange and act on sustainable and innovation procurement, and any public or semi-public authority can join. It set up the awards to showcase sustainable and innovation procurement activities and tender procedures and give visibility to “the most dynamic, forward-looking and innovative public authorities and their initiatives.” The idea is that the solutions have potential for replication within other public bodies and will boost the drive for sustainable and innovation procurement.

To give you an idea of what previous winners looked like, you can read our report on the 2014 winner Erasmus Medical Centre Rotterdam and the 2015 winner Federal Procurement Agency Austria. And to give you an even deeper insight if you are thinking of entering the awards yourself, we ran an interview with one of the judges to get an inside look at what they are looking for Procurement of Innovation Awards – an Interview with one of the Judges.

So what can the winners look forward to? Free entry and a presentation at the next EcoProcura conference; a Case study on the SP Platform and PPI Platform; Publicity in a variety of ICLEI publications; a trophy and the right to call themselves ‘best [title] 20xx’; one year free participation in the Procura+ Network; the right to use the logo in their email signature.

The closing date for entries is September 9th, then The Procura+ Network will announce a list of nomminees, after that and by the end of September, a short list of finalists is announced and then the selected winners are announced 14 October 2016 at CompraVerde, Rome.

It is interesting to note that you do not apply to a specific category, the jury evaluation process looks at the merit of each application for all three categories.

There is more information on the Procura+ website with links to the downloadable application form. Do take a look if you have an innovation or sustainability story to tell.
